The Highrange Development Society (HDS) in Idukki, Kerala, has been actively involved in flood relief efforts, particularly during the devastating floods and landslides in August 2018. The district experienced severe rainfall leading to significant loss of life, property, and agricultural land.
Key Initiatives by HDS:
Disaster Response Team: HDS established the Idukki Disaster Response Team (IDRT) to provide emergency relief and rehabilitation support to affected communities. The team received training in first aid and emergency relief operations to effectively assist during disasters.
Immediate Relief Efforts: In collaboration with parish priests and local volunteers, HDS visited affected areas to assess damages and provide necessary assistance, including arranging for the needs of individuals in relief camps.
Situational Assessment: HDS conducted comprehensive studies to understand the impact of the disaster, identifying over 6,000 families severely affected, with significant losses in housing and agriculture.
Through these initiatives, HDS demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting the Idukki community during times of natural calamities, focusing on both immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation.
