The LOCAL ORGANIC FARMERS GROUP (LOFG) project, a joint endeavor by the Highrange Development Society (HDS) and NABARD, stands as a pioneering initiative in organic farming across ten groups spanning three panchayats: Marayoor, Vathikudy, and Nedumkandam in Kerala. Aligned with the core objectives of the "LOFG" scheme, this project aimed to address critical challenges such as ensuring organic food security for local communities, enhancing livelihoods through sustainable agricultural practices, and reviving traditional agricultural knowledge. A key aspect of the project involved the implementation of a rigorous Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) for organic certification, with all relevant documentation meticulously maintained and updated within a dedicated software system.
The primary objective of the LOFG project was to establish a sustainable and replicable model of organic farming that effectively manages natural resources while improving the quality of life for local families. This involved creating a robust system for organic food production, processing, and marketing through various channels such as companies and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). By strategically combining traditional agricultural wisdom with modern farming techniques, the project aimed to foster sustainable development within the region and ensure long-term benefits for the local community. The PGS certification process played a crucial role in ensuring the authenticity and integrity of organic produce, thereby enhancing market value and consumer confidence.
