The second phase of the Tribal Development Fund (TDF) Project, launched in 2021, expanded to 10 hamlets in Marayoor, Idukki, Kerala. Building upon the success of the initial phase, this initiative continued to focus on sustainable agricultural practices, including the cultivation of pepper, coffee, vegetables, and millets like ragi and cholam. Livestock rearing (goats, poultry) and lemongrass extraction were also integrated into the project. With a reach of 500 families and cultivation across 350 acres of land, the project has generated consistent income through the sale of produce via a tribal Farmers Producer Organization (FPO) supported by NABARD. Recognizing the nutritional and environmental benefits of millets, the second phase actively promotes their cultivation. To ensure sustainable agricultural practices, the project emphasizes soil and water conservation through the construction of 11 water tanks and two check dams. Furthermore, the project fosters inter-departmental collaboration with the Marayoor Grama Panchayat, Forest Department, Agriculture Department, and Tribal Department to avail resources and maximize impact. Skill development trainings, including value addition techniques like hill broom making, tailoring, and crop management are provided to enhance livelihoods and improve the overall well-being of the tribal community.
